Member Hour – Charles Willson Peale and His 'Cabinet of Curiosities'

Artist Charles Willson Peale s life size portrait The Artist in His Museum is one of the first and most striking works you ll encounter in the Taubman s special ticketed exhibition, Making American Artists: Stories from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1776-1976 . With a flourish and big reveal, the artist proudly shared a Cabinet of Curiosities featuring natural specimens, dinosaur bones, artworks, and more that were displayed to inform and instruct the viewer. During this month s special Member Hour, Deputy Director of Exhibitions Katie Hirsch will provide artistic and historical insights into Peale s The Artist in His Museum along with a review of the Taubman Museum s very own cabinet of curiosities. Please check-in at Visitor Services when you arrive, and we will meet in the Atrium and go to the galleries together.
