A painter, sculptor, installation artist, educator, and advocate for women in the arts, Gillespie forged her own path through a rapidly changing art world. Her career touched many of the major artistic movements of the 20th century, from abstract expressionism and decorative abstraction to site-specific installations and public art. Her unmistakable use of brilliant color and sweeping, ribbon-like forms made her work instantly recognizable to legions of admirers. Gillespie also believed art belonged beyond gallery walls.
