More about Harrison Museum of African American Culture
The Harrison Museum of African American Culture has told the story of Black life in the Roanoke Valley since 1985. It began on the ground floor of the old Harrison School, which opened in 1917 as the first school in the city to teach Black students past the seventh grade, with Lucy Addison as its first principal. After years downtown, the museum is back in Northwest Roanoke in its new home at Melrose Plaza. Alongside its exhibits on local history, it hosts cabaret nights, workshops and community gatherings like the annual Interfaith Potluck.
