Catalan-American artist Pierre Daura was living in France when the Spanish Civil War engulfed his homeland. Deeply concerned for the people of Spain, Daura worked to aid refugees before enlisting in the Spanish Republican Army in 1937. He was stationed in Teruel, one of the war’s most intense conflict areas, and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant before an injury sent him home to his family in France. The experience marked a turning point in both Daura’s life and his art.
